Thirty years ago, US 6 & 19 were routed around Meadville on the French Creek Parkway to alleviate traffic through downtown.  In April 2003, the "TO PA 27" signs were removed along US 6 East & US 19 North and were erected along Park Avenue, the original alignment of US 6 & 19.  These pictures are found at the location marked "A" on the above map.  Coming off the Smock Bridge into Meadville, US 6 & 19 continue on the French Creek Parkway.  US 322 exits at Park Avenue and immediately turns right.  Park Avenue is the most heavily traveled street in Meadville.

At the intersection of Park Avenue and North St you'll find a new assembly for PA 27 East.  There is no signage for PA 27 West.  This intersection was the original west end of PA 27 until 1974.  A small picture of an original sign from 1965 can be viewed HERE   The new PA 27 East sign is roughly in the same place as the original sign 30 years ago along US 6 East & US 19 North.

REFERENCE POINT B
REFERENCE POINT C
The first of two brand new PA 27 shields are located at the corner of Park Avenue and Pine St.  Several of the assemblies in Meadville have the signs attached to the far left.
REFERENCE POINT D
REFERENCE POINT A
At the end of Smock Bridge stands the first "TO PA 27" sign.  French Creek Parkway continues to the left in this picture carrying US 6 & 19 around Meadville and to PA 27's current end northwest of downtown Meadville.
REFERENCE POINT E
The sign assembly to the above right is incorrect.  Traffic at this intersection would be heading on PA 27 EAST not TO PA 27.  The sign may be corrected in the near future.  Looking at the back of the sign, they can be identified as the same shields highlighted in picture below.  The picture below is an older sign assembly found at the end of Linden Avenue at French Creek Parkway before the "TO PA 27" shields were removed.
To the far right is the first sign indicating the beginning of SR 27, also found at this intersection.   Park Avenue is signed as SR 1001 from Meadville to it's northern end at PA 198 in Saegertown.  Does PA 27 end at Park Avenue as it it did 30 years ago, or does it extend to French Creek Parkway as indicated by the shields along the way?
