Up until the late seventies, PA 86 began at US 19, just south of Erie, was multiplexed with US 19 in Cambridge Springs and then ended on PA 27 just a few hundred yards away from US 19. Today, PA 86 only goes as far north as Cambridge Springs, but it's southern end remains at PA 27.
Above is a view from the corner of North St (PA 27) & N Main St (PA 86). The Grace Methodist Church is where both of my sisters were married.
On PA 27 East you will find the two sign assemblies below.
As PA 86 begins its northern journey to Cambridge Springs, it splits to the right at a "Y" intersection as shown above. There is a closeup of the PA 86 North shield also. PA 86's path goes directly through Allegheny College.
The PA 86 END assembly is only a few feet from the PA 27 junction. Newer shields were placed in late 2001 (far right).

When Interstate 86 opened in Erie County in 1999, there was speculation that PA 86 would be changed to a new number. Some PennDOT maps are showing the route as PA 886, however all LWS along PA 86 are still signed as SR 86.
