14 songs reached #1 on Billboard in 1955
Perhaps the most defining moment of rock history occured on July 7, 1955 when Bill Haley took "Rock Around The Clock"  to number one.  It has become a moment in time when music is divided by all that came before and all to come.  Others argue that The Penguin's "Earth Angel" may be the first rock 'n roll song.  "Earth Angel" finished the year at #19.  The top acts of the year would have different results in the years to come.  One of the biggest entertaiment legends of all time, Frank Sinatra, placed three singles in the year end Top 40.  Georgia Gibbs, who had several hits in early 1950's reached Billboard's Top 10 for the final time with the #1 single, "Dance With Me Henry".  It was normal for many versions of the same song to achieve hit status during this time era.  Three versions of "The Ballad Of Davy Crockett" by Bill Hayes (#7), Fess Parker (#31) and Tennessee Ernie Ford (#37) reached the year end Top 40.  "Ain't That A Shame", a number one hit for Pat Boone, was also a Top Ten single for Fats Domino as "Ain't It A Shame".  Multiple versions of "Unchained Melody", "Melody Of Love" and "Tweedle Dee" also made the year end Top 40.
