rewind to 1963
In 1964, a musical revolution began rivaled the beginning of the rock era a decade earlier.  Four young men from Liverpool, England would take the music world by storm and the face of modern pop music would never be the same.  The Beatles carved a niche in history as they placed hit after hit after hit on the national charts throughout 1964.  UU-BRU Radio Gold Archives was no exception.  The Beatles were the first act to control as many as six of the year's top ten hits.  Despite their overwhelming influence and popularity, they were not able to secure the year's biggest hit.  The Dave Clark Five, also from England, barely surpassed "Can't Buy Me Love" for the year's biggest hit.  The Beatles held down the rest of the top five.  Another act to earn a top 10 spot were The Supremes.  The trio from Detroit was led by Diana Ross and became the most successful act on the Motown roster.  Lesley Gore had three major hits in 1963 and came back in 1964 with "You Don't Own Me" at #7.  Lesley Gore's hit managed to hold it's own during the peak of Beatlemania in the spring of 1964.  Dean Martin rounded out the top ten with his biggest hit of the rock era, "Everybody Loves Somebody".  Although The Four Seasons did not finish the year in the top ten, they also survived the British invasion with "Rag Doll" at #12 and "Dawn" at #14.
UU-BRU Radio Playlist was created in 1978.  All UU-BRU Radio Gold Archives prior to 1978 are a compilation of year end charts from national trade magazines, several radio stations and other sources.  Weeks at number one refer to Billboard.
