15 songs reached #1 on Billboard in 1968
"Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" was one of several duets released by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell. Before Tammi Terrell's brief but brilliant career ended, they would have several hits together including "Your Precious Love" and "Ain't No Mountain High Enough". Marvin Gaye also charted at #9 for the year with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine". The Monkees had to settle for #2 for a second year in a row. "Valleri" was the only appearance for The Monkees on UU-BRU Radio Gold Archive's Top 40 of 1968. Dion may have had the top song of the year with "Abraham, Martin and John", as the single was still in the Top 10 at the end of December, yet still finished at #3. The Doors followed their success of 1967 with another year end Top 10 hit, "Hello, I Love You". Aretha Franklin was solidifying her position as the Queen Of Soul with several more hit singles in 1968. Her biggest was "Since You've Been Gone", ranking at #14. During the year, Aretha Franklin also had hits with "The House That Jack Built" (#22) and "Think" (#26) as well as "Since You've Been Gone" (#41). The Young Rascals dropped "Young" from their name, but it didn't affect their chart performance. "People Got To Be Free" was the #5 single of 1968.
UU-BRU Radio Playlist was created in 1978. All UU-BRU Radio Gold Archives prior to 1978 are a compilation of year end charts from national trade magazines, several radio stations and other sources. Weeks at number one refer to Billboard.
