Carole King released a landmark project in 1971 with "Tapestry".  The album was the first major success for a female singer-songwriter and paved the way for many artists to follow.  Carole King was no stranger to having a year end number one single.  She had penned "Will You Still Love Me " for The Shirelles, the number one song on UU-BRU Radio Gold Archives for 1961.  Another track from "Tapestry", "You've Got A Friend" landed at number three for the year as performed by James Taylor.  The brother and sister pop duo of Richard and Karen Carpenter had emerged in 1970, but placed a pair of singles in the top five year end chart for 1971.  The Carpenters led a new adult contemporary sound that included hit singles for Bread among others.  The Beatles continued to have solo success as John Lennon earned the runner up single of the year with "Imagine" and Paul McCartney had his first solo hit at #13 with "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey".  Motown superstar Marvin Gaye earned top male artist honors with socially concious hits "What's Going On" and "Mercy Mercy Me", both year end top 20 singles.  The top new act of 1970 hailed from England.  Singer songwriter Reginald Dwight, better known as Elton John, broke through in late 1970/early 1971 with "Border Song" and "Your Song".
