Like the number one single of 1967, "Ode To Billie Joe", the top song of 1973 also presented one of the great mysteries of rock history.  Who was the subject of Carly Simon's "You're So Vain"?  Suspects included Warren Beatty, James Taylor and Mick Jagger, but the answer has never been revealed.  Carly Simon's hit reached the top in January and went on to outrank all other singles of 1973.  The top four singles of the year were all by female acts, a first on UU-BRU Radio Gold Archives.  "You're So Vain" was produced by Richard Perry.  He was also the man behind the boards for Nilsson's "Without You", the top song of 1972.  Maureen McGovern had the second biggest hit, "The Morning After" from The Poseidon Adventure.  Vicki Lawrence had gained popularity as a member of The Carol Burnette Show, but she also found success on the pop chart with "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia".  The Beatles may have disbanded, but they continued to dominate the chart as solo members.  Paul McCartney and WIngs placed two singles in the year end top ten including the title track to the latest James Bond film, Live And Let Die.  George Harrison landed at #9 with "Give Me Love" and Ringo Starr was represented with "You're Sixteen" at #12.
UU-BRU Radio Playlist was created in 1978.  All UU-BRU Radio Gold Archives prior to 1978 are a compilation of year end charts from national trade magazines, several radio stations and other sources.  Weeks at number one refer to Billboard.
