Madonna confirmed her superstar status when she debuted at number one in late May 1985, a position she would not relinquish until August. Her record 12 week run at number one made "Into The Groove" the top single of the year. Taken from her hit movie Desperately Seeking Susan, "Into The Groove" wasn't Madonna's only hit during 1985. The follow up, "Dress You Up" also hit number one, spending four weeks at the top and finishing the year at #4. She also scored three number two singles ("Crazy For You", "Material Girl", and "Angel"), easily making her the Top Act Of The Year. The week "Into The Groove" debuted at number one, "Angel" jumped from #13 to #9, while "Crazy For You" held on to #10, giving Madonna three top ten singles in one week. Although Marvin Gaye died a year earlier in 1984, the second and third biggest singles of the year were both tributes to the Motown legend. The Commodores (sans Lionel Richie) scored their biggest hit to date with "Nightshift", which also paid tribute to the late Jackie Wilson. "Missing You" by Diana Ross (written by former Commodore Lionel Richie) had peaked at #15 in late 1984, fell off the chart only to re-enter in February and soar all the way to the top. Newcomer Whitney Houston had scored a couple minor hits in 1984 including duets with Teddy Pendergrass and Jermaine Jackson prior to her breakthrough hit, "Saving All My Love For You" (#5).
