TOP SINGLE OF 1988

BRENDA RUSSELL
featuring
JOE ESPOSITO
"Piano In The Dark"
There was a revolving door at number one on UU-BRU Radio Playlist in 1988.  Twenty-seven songs reached the pinnacle, yet the top song of the year never charted higher than number three.  "Piano In The Dark" peaked at #3 at the end of May, yet remained in the top 40 for 26 weeks, earning enough points to deny Whitney Houston the number one song of the year for a second year in a row.  "Piano In The Dark" featured harmony vocals by Joe Esposito, who also sang on the top single of 1979 as lead singer of Brooklyn Dreams on Donna Summer's "Heaven Knows".  Whitney Houston remained the top act of the year and also scored the number two song of the year as she did in 1987.  "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" was the fourth number one single from her second album, "Whitney".  Before 1988 was over, she would score two more number one singles, including a fifth from the same album, "Love Will Save The Day" and "One Moment In Time", theme for the 1988 Summer Olympics .  Richard Marx did not hit number one on UU-BRU Radio Playlist with "Hold On To The Nights", but it remained at #9 for eight consecutive weeks.  By doing so, it outscored his number one single, "Endless Summer Nights" and landed at #8 on the year end survey.  Bon Jovi kicked off the "New Jersey" album with the first single to debut at number one in over three years when "Bad Medicine" entered at the top of the chart in September.
