For the second year in a row, the number one single was written by Diane Warren. In 1990 she co-wrote "How Can We Be Lovers" with Michael Bolton, which spent two weeks at the top in April. Other artists with hit singles by Diane Warren in 1990 include Expose, Taylor Dayne, Cher, Joe Cocker and Heart. Madonna barely edged Phil Collins for top act of the year. Madonna scored five top ten singles in 1990, including the number one hits "Vogue" and "Justify My Love". Phil Collins visited the chart five times including a pair of number one singles ("I Wish It Would Rain Down" and "Something Happened On The Way To Heaven") as well as a number two single ("Do You Remember"). The top new act of the year was Mariah Carey. Her first two singles both hit number one ("Vision Of Love" and "Love Takes Time") and both ended on the year end chart in the top five. They propelled Mariah Carey to the fourth biggest act of 1990, following Madonna, Phil Collins and Janet Jackson. Janet Jackson had three number one singles in 1990, the only act to do so. When MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This" reached #13 in May, it spent an incredible ten weeks at that position, earning enough points to land at #13 for the year. Thirteen must have been lucky for MC Hammer as "U Can't Touch This" scored more points than 13 songs that hit number one in 1990.
