TOP SINGLE OF 1991

GARTH BROOKS
"Shameless"
For the second time in UU-BRU Radio Playlist's history, the number one single of the year did not make the Billboard Hot 100, following Madonna's "Into The Groove" in 1985.  Popular music was becoming more and more fragmented as the 1990's began as the golden age of AM styled variety was disappearing.  UU-BRU Radio Playlist adopted an AC/country format while still adding top album cuts and pop hits.  Garth Brooks became a major force in 1991, scoring six chart hits.  His cover of Billy Joel's "Shameless" entered the chart at number two and remained in the top five for 16 weeks.  Billy Joel's original version of "Shameless" joined Garth Brooks in the Top 10 in November, the first time two artists scored simultaneous top ten hits with the same song.  Mark Wahlberg, brother of New Kid On The Block Donnie Wahlberg, made it the top before his brother did with "Good Vibrations", the second biggest hit of the year.  Neither Cathy Dennis or the Divinyls "touched" the top of the chart, but their top five singles, "Touch Me" and "I Touch Myself" finished the year at number three and number four respectively.  Mariah Carey placed two singles in the year end top ten for the second consecutive year.  Anticipation for her second album was so high, the first single, "Emotions" entered the chart at number one.  The top new act of 1991, C+C Music Factory,  were also the only act to score three number one singles during 1991.
