TOP SINGLE OF 1999

LONESTAR
"Amazed"
Lonestar spent 37 weeks in the top 40 with "Amazed", setting a new record previously held by Scandal's "The Warrior" (36 weeks).  The Nashville band narrowly edged out "You Get What You Give" by New Radicals aka Gregg Alexander for the top spot.  Madonna earned her first number one single in nine years with "Beautiful Stranger" from Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.  Whitney Houston also scored her biggest hits in several years with 3 chart toppers from her "My Love Is Your Love" album.  Tim McGraw reached number two twice in 1999 with "Please Remember Me" and "Something Like That", making him UU-BRU Radio Playlist's Top Male Artist of the year.  Two acts that scored number one singles 20 years ago in 1979, Blondie and Donna Summer, returned to do the same in 1999 with "My Maria" and "I Will Go With You", respectively.  While country music continued to dominate UU-BRU Radio Playlist, Latin influenced pop was also becoming ever present.  Ex-Menudo member Ricky Martin was the first to hit number one with  "Living La Vida Loca" reaching the top in only three weeks.  Latin singer Marc Anthony from New York reached number two with "I Need To Know".  Carlos Santana scored his first chart topper with a little help from Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20 on "Smooth".  From the Bronx to the big screen to the pop chart, Jennifer Lopez closed out the decade at number one with "Waiting For Tonight", #43 for the year.
