After a couple near misses, Celine Dion emerged in 2000 with the number one single of the year. "That's The Way It Is" topped the chart for eight weeks and remained in the top ten for 23 weeks, outdistancing Vertical Horizon's "Everything You Want". Vertical Horizon earned more points than any other group in 2000. Creed was a close second for top group, breaking through with a pair of number one singles, "Higher" and "With Arms Wide Open". Whitney Houston was the year's biggest act on UU-BRU Radio Playlist, the first to accomplish that feat five times (1986, 1987. 1991, 1993, 2000). The hottest new act of the year was Macy Gray, who collected three top 40 hits, including her number one debut, "I Try". Local favorites from Pittsburgh, The Clarks, broke through with their first chart topper, "Better Off Without You". Two of the year end top 40 hits failed to make the weekly top ten. Trisha Yearwood's "Real Live Woman" spent 12 consecutive weeks at #15 during 2000, earning enough points to land at #29 for the year. Lee Ann Womack's "I Hope You Dance" never made it higher than #14 during the year, but spent 24 weeks on the chart. Kid Rock also broke through in 2000, earning three top ten hits on UU-BRU Radio Playlist, including the number one hit "Wasting Time" and the number two hit "Only God Knows Why". Two acts that hit number one during the year failed to make the year end top 40 include Will Smith ("Will 2K" at #70) and The Foo Fighters ("Learn To Fly" at #52).
