TOP SINGLE OF 2001

STAIND
"It's Been Awhile"
"Unrelenting grimness" was one description of Aaron Lewis and Staind's music.  Whatever it was referred to, it produced UU-BRU Radio Playlist's number one single of 2001.  "It's Been Awhile" spent all but three weeks of the second half of the year in the Top 10.  For the first time since UU-BRU Radio Playlist was created in 1978, there was a tie for the top act of the year.  Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez earned exactly the same points.  Janet Jackson won the tie breaker, by spending 8 weeks at number one as compared to 7 weeks for Jennifer Lopez.  Lopez was also runner up for top single of the year with "I'm Real".  Local favorite Patrick Monahan led Train to their first chart topper ("Drops Of Jupiter") landing at #3 for the year.  Remakes of three major hits from the 1970's placed on the year end chart.  At #12, Destiny's Child nearly matched the year end ranking of Samantha Sang's "Emotion (#11 in 1978).  An all star quartet featuring Christina Aguilera and Pink spent 5 weeks at #1 with Labelle's 1975 hit "Lady Marmalade".  Janet Jackson reworked 1973's "You're So Vain" with some help from Carly Simon, taking "Son Of A Gun" to number two in November.  In 1999, Edwin McCain took Diane Warren's "I Could Not Ask For More" to #8 for the year.  In 2002, Sara Evans ended the year at #17 with her version.
